2. What if the teacher is mean?

Help your child see that teachers choose to be teachers because they love kids, so they will be patient, kind and fun -- not mean.

Pick up a book about going to school and read it together with your child, then discuss what the character does. "Feeling understood and having examples to refer to often will help your child overcome the fear," explains Atilla Ceranoglu, M.D., a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School.

It's also helpful to role-play what she is afraid of: You play the teacher, then switch it around and let her be the teacher, and you be your child.
