Pregnancy Ultrasound

Ultrasound scans in pregnancy: How and why they're performed and what they detect.

Transvaginal ultrasound:

The procedure

Unlike the transabdominal ultrasound, the transvaginal ultrasound does not require a full bladder.

In this method, a hand-held probe is gently inserted into the vagina. Some women feel more comfortable inserting the vaginal probe themselves (similar to inserting a tampon).

This procedure generally takes 10 to 15 minutes.

Uses of ultrasound

Ultrasound can be used in obstetrics as well as for detecting gynecological problems. Some common reasons an ultrasound may be performed can include:

  • Confirming a pregnancy
  • To determine fetal age
  • Screening for abnormalities
  • Detecting multiple pregnancies
  • Suspected miscarriage or fetal death
  • Determine ectopic pregnancy
  • Placental abnormalities
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Structural problem with uterus
  • Suspected ovarian tumor/fibroids
