Tampon Use: Tampons Q&A

Answers to your questions about tampon use.

How do I know when my tampon needs to be changed?

In general, a tampons should be changed every 4 to 8 hours. But there are some guidelines to help you figure out when it's time to change it: A saturated tampon should be easy to remove. If it feels dry, wait a while longer for it to absorb more fluid before removing. However, if you notice leaking, or if the tampon string is wet with menstrual fluid, it's likely to be fully saturated and needs to be changed.

Why do tampons leak?

Usually, leaking indicates that the tampon is fully saturated. You can wear a pantiliner with your tampon for extra protection. Or get a tampon with a higher absorbency.

How do I remove the tampon?

Squat slightly or sit on the toilet with knees apart. Then pull the tampon string gently and steadily downward.

What if the tampon string breaks?

It's very unlikely for the string to break. But if this should occur, you can still remove the tampon by squatting down and placing your thumb and forefinger into your vagina to feel and reach for it. If you're unable to reach it, see you doctor ASAP to have it removed.

Toxic shock syndrome

There is a small risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) associated with tampon use. TSS is a very rare disease, but you are at a higher risk of TSS if a tampon stays in your vagina longer than 8 hours. Signs of TSS include sudden high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, sunburn-like rash, dizziness, and muscle aches. If you experience one or more of these warning signs, remove your tampon immediately and consult your doctor. To reduce the risk of TSS, always use a tampon with the least amount of absorbency for your needs. You can also reduce the risk of TSS by alternating your tampon use with feminine sanitary pads. And remember to change your tampon every 4 to 8 hours.
