What causes high blood cholesterol and what you can do.

Common Causes of High Blood Cholesterol

  • Taking too much saturated fats, which raises LDL-cholesterol (the 'bad' cholesterol) and lowers HDL-cholesterol levels (the 'good' cholesterol) in the blood.
  • Taking too much cholesterol-rich food, which raises total blood cholesterol level.
  • Taking too little fibre, which is needed for excretion of cholesterol.
  • Lack of exercise, which results in blood fats/ cholesterol not being used up.
  • An inherited tendency for your own liver to produce too much cholesterol.

What You Can Do

  • If you are overweight, attempt to reduce weight. See your doctor if you are obese.
  • Take less fats in general, especially saturated fats.
  • Cut down on cholesterol-rich food like brains, kidney, crab, fish roe.
  • Take more high-fibre foods like cereals, fruits and vegetables.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Do aerobic exercises.
