Contraception or birth control devices are used to prevent pregnancy from occurring after sexual intercourse. These devices are a temporary means to prevent conception; a couple who use these devices may still conceive a child later. Contraceptives are usually used as an alternative birth control to vasectomy (surgical sterilisation method for males) and tubal ligation (surgical sterilisation for females), which are considered permanent. Following is a review of the various forms of contraceptive devices:

1. Condoms

Condoms are available over the counter. They are used by placing the rubber sheath over the man's erect penis before insertion into the woman's vagina. Condoms also provide protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), such as AIDS and gonorrhoea.
