Which exercises are healthiest on my joints?

To blast calories and burn fat in joint-friendly ways, choose low-impact aerobic exercises that keep one foot on the ground at all times, like walking, stair climbing and dancing. These exercises build endurance and strong bones as well as strengthen leg muscles.

Also go for activities that include steady movements, instead of those that require sudden stops and starts like tennis. Indoors, the elliptical machine moves your body through a safe range of motion with minimal impact.

Do include resistance exercises to improve muscle strength, which reduces joint pain by better supporting the joints. Try free weights, elastic bands or machines for resistance.

Swimming and water aerobics are also excellent options for a whole-body workout without putting excess stress on your joints.
