Get toned quick with these dumbbell exercises you can do at home!

See a toned and fab new you with dumbbell workouts you can do at home. "A dumbbell workout is more effective and produces quicker results than using machines," says Stephenie Karony, certified health and fitness instructor and co-author of Workouts With Weights. The reason? The movements involved in lifting dumbbells are closer to real-life movements, so they help strengthen your muscles for practical purposes, explains Karony. Here are five dumbbell exercises to start you off:

1. Dumbbell row

  • 1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent. Grasp dumbbells with arms extended in front of you, palms facing down.
  • 2. Pull in dumbbells towards you, as if rowing, as far as you can without rolling your shoulders. Push dumbbells out to starting position.

  • Sets: 2
    Reps: 15

    2. Dumbbell shoulder press

  • 1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart. Grasp dumbbells at shoulder height, palms facing out, elbows pointing out to sides.
  • 2. Lift dumbbells up above your head, until arms are fully extended. Lower back to starting position.

  • Sets: 2
