Thermage & Radio Frequency Therapy

Guide to radiofrequency (RF) rejuvenation procedure.
Thermage™, a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that uses radio frequency technology to rejuvenate the face, has become one of the most popular anti-ageing treatments in the cosmetic surgeon's office. Find out how it works and what to expect.

What is Thermage™?

The Thermage™ is a non-invasive procedure that uses a patented capacitive radiofrequency technology called ThermaCool™ to rejuvenate facial features. The result is akin to a mini face-lift: The skin becomes tighter, wrinkles are smoothed and the face is gently lifted for a youthful appearance. Unlike lasers, the procedure can be performed on patients of all skin types.

The Procedure

After a numbing cream is applied on your skin, the doctor delivers radio frequency waves emitted from a handheld device which uniformly heats and penetrates the skin (even more than a laser does). This deep uniform heating causes the underlying collagen to tighten and encourages the production of new collagen, resulting in smoother and more youthful-looking skin.

As the radio frequency energy is delivered to your skin and underlying tissue, you will feel brief waves of deep heating sensation. Your doctor will select and control the amount of energy delivered to balance procedural comfort with maximum results. But if you find the heat painful, request for the intensity to be lowered.

The Thermage procedure can take anywhere from twenty minutes to two hours, depending on the size of the treatment area. Immediately following a Thermage procedure, your skin may be slightly pink for a day or two, but the lifting effect is immediately apparent. Over time, you will notice additional tightening.

Unlike many laser procedures requiring four or more sessions, a single Thermage treatment has produced results in the majority of patients. Your physician will determine the course of treatment that is right for you.

How Long Does the Result Last?

Up to 18 months.

Risks
