Softness is key for flattering a square face, says Ashcroft, so think lots of feathery face-framing layers to break up those angular lines. Longer layers that fall below the jawline have a diffusing effect.Long, soft wavy hair like Wilde's is also great for taking the edge off angular features. "Coax it to fall around your face to soften the jawline," Ashcroft suggests. Using a curling iron, curl sections from chin level down. (Don't go any higher as volume at the sides can make your face look wider, which you don't want.)
As a rule of thumb, stay away from blunt-cuts, says Ashcroft. One-length blunt bobs, for example, are too harsh and will only make your face look even boxier. Instead, ask your stylist for an angled bob (like Knightley's) -- this tapering cut has long pieces in front that gradually get shorter toward the back -- which serves to lengthen the face.
Likewise, avoid heavy, blunt bangs. These look severe on square face shapes. Your more flattering option: A breezy, side-swept fringe a la Wilde that accentuates your eyes and cheekbones.
Styles that add height at the crown are also flattering and visually elongate your face. An easy way to get volume on top is to spritz volumizing spray onto damp roots, then brush hair upward as you blow-dry.
